Chapter Nine

Lorelei was on edge the next few days, but Latte acted like her normal, feline self. It was reassuring, but she still found herself unable to relax completely. If someone really was out there with dastardly intentions toward her, then they could strike again at any time. They might even wait weeks or months. She wouldn’t be able to relax until she knew exactly what was going on – and the thought that she may never know frightened her.

Alyssa was still shaken up from her encounter as well, though telling her the truth about Latte had given her something else to focus on. Lorelei was more than happy to talk with her about the cat and relate some of her less-frightening adventures, but when they fell silent, her usually perky friend seemed much more somber than usual. Lorelei wasn’t sure what she should do, so she decided that simply distracting Alyssa was the best course of action. She didn’t want to bring up Valerie’s murder if it made her friend uncomfortable, and she felt certain that Alyssa knew she would be there for her if she did need to talk.

It was early on Thursday afternoon, nearly the end of Lorelei’s shift, when Alyssa finally seemed more like herself. They were both at the front counter talking, and Alyssa just laughed and shook her head when Lorelei asked if she wanted to come over.

“Look, I know what you’ve been doing these past few days, and I appreciate it, but you don’t need to hover. I’m fine, really. It’s just going to take me some time to get completely back to normal. I still have other things I need to deal with, though, and I can’t keep putting them off.”

“Like Jack?” Lorelei asked in a low voice as she got up and urged Latte into her carrier. She was bringing the cat with her to work every day now, whereas before she usually left her at home a couple of times a week so she could be free to do errands or go out with her friends after she got done with her shift.

Alyssa nodded, wrinkling her nose. “I just feel terrible for leading him on like this. I already decided to break up with him, and that hasn’t changed, and I feel like I’ve been taking advantage of him ever since… ever since the murder.” She took a deep breath, but her voice didn’t break. “He’s been great, and it’s been a real comfort to have him around, but nothing has changed. I’m certain that I don’t feel anything more than friendship toward him, and I think the sooner I tell him that, the better.”

“You’re probably right,” Lorelei admitted. “I guess it’s not fair of me to take up all of your time. Feel free to come over later this evening if you need to, though.”

“I might take you up on that,” her friend said with a smile. “Even though I’ll be the one breaking up with him, I’m sure I’ll need a good cry afterward.
